UK Airport Security Liquids rules
It can be so stressful going through an airport with kids but add in the long queues at security and trying to squeeze all your liquids into a bag. The best advice is to check the rules below and pack all your 100ml or below liquids into a bag in advance rather than waiting to use the provided bags at the airport.
These Nom Nom Reusables sandwich bags are the best option we have found. They're opaque on one side for privacy and clear on the other side to comply with the rules. The size is perfect and they fold flat when not in use but they also stand up on a sturdy base so could be used as a wash bag whilst away too.
According to Gov.co.uk liquids include:
- all drinks, including water
- liquid or semi-liquid foods, for example soup, jam, honey and syrups
- cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara and lip gloss
- sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants
- pastes, including toothpaste
- gels, including hair and shower gel
- contact lens solution
- any other solutions and items of similar consistency
If you do take liquids in your hand luggage, the following rules apply:
- containers must hold no more than 100ml
- containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm
- contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed
- the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top
- you’re limited to 1 plastic bag per person
- you must show the bag at the airport security point
Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally cannot go through security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions.
Exemptions
You can take liquid containers larger than 100ml through security at all UK airports if they:
- are for essential medical purposes
- are for special dietary requirements
- contain baby food or baby milk
